In light of constantly changing regulations, restrictions on numbers of people permitted at gatherings, and social distancing rules, Metcalfe Gallery at Brisbane Institute of Art has decided not to hold any opening events. Exhibitors are welcome to encourage participants to come and see the exhibition with friends and family sometime over the duration of the show.


For the well being of volunteers and visitors the following conditions need to be complied with by all artists, volunteers and visitors.

  • Exclude artists, volunteers and visitors who are unwell.  
  • Display conditions of entry (website, social media, venue entry).
  • Maintain physical distancing 1.5 metres. Capacity must not exceed one Person per 4 square metres. Volunteers to monitor.
    • Foyer = 11 people
    • Middle gallery room = 11 People
    • Gallery space A = 14 people
    • Gallery space B = 11 people
  • Display signage in gallery spaces to communicate the maximum safe capacity, and display signage with line at 1.5 meters and arrows to direct the flow of visitors.  
  • Reduce crowding wherever possible and promote physical distancing. Where reasonably practical, ensure staff maintain 1.5 metres physical distance at all times (including at meal breaks).
  • Review deliveries and request contactless delivery and invoicing where practical.


Daily Procedures for Volunteers and/or Artists

  1. Sanitise hands before Opening
  2. Wipe/spray contact surfaces with sanitiser or sanitiser wipes.
    • Door handles and rails,
    • desk,
    • EFTPOS machine after each use,
    • fridge door handle,
    • jug handle,
    • light switches,
    • alarm keypad,
    • cash box,
    • spray toilet seat with disinfectant. (See kitchen for cleaning kit.)
  3. Place hand sanitiser on plinth just inside gallery door.  Encourage   visitors to sanitise.
  4. Registration for Contact Tracing; Keep a record of name and a mobile number or email address for all staff, volunteers, visitors to exhibits and contractors, for a period of at least 28 days. Ensure records are used only for the purposes of tracing COVID-19 infections and are stored confidentially and securely.
  5. Leave back gallery door and kitchen door open at all times to increase ventilation
  6. Sanitiser points;
    • Entry inside gallery on plinth
    • Beside EFTPOS machine placed at front of desk
    • 2nd gallery room on plinth

  7. Monitor gallery numbers.
    • Foyer = 11 people
    • Middle gallery room = 10 People
    • Gallery space A = 14 people
    • Gallery space B = 11 people
  8. Sanitise hands at end of day after locking everything.
