Terms and Conditions

Please read these terms and conditions before completing the Entry Form on this page

Eligible Work

  • Work that is flat, possessing height and width, inclusive of painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and photography.
  • Works must not exceed 150cm x 150cm (60" x 60").
  • Bas or low relief art work in which materials protrude slightly from flat background to a depth of no more than 10cm are eligible.
  • Works must be ready to hang.
  • Works must have been created no more than 2 years prior to the entry date.

Entrants

Must be 18 years of age or above. The Milburn Art Prize is open to all artists resident in Australia.

Application Process

  • Applications will only be accepted via the online entry facility of the Milburn Art Prize.
  • Applicants must have an email address as all correspondence will be by email.
  • The entrance fee must be paid before an image of the artwork can be uploaded – this fee is non-refundable.
  • An entrant can pay on-line via the Brisbane Institute of Art website or by credit card. An image of the work to be submitted, together with artist statement, should be uploaded at this time.
  • An entrant can elect to pay by cheque/money order. An email will be sent to you when the cheque has cleared. The image can then be uploaded to a DVD and posted to PO Box 2083, Windsor Qld 4030.
  • All entries must be received on or before the closing date as specified in the Exhibition in Brief. Online entry will be unavailable after this date. Entries received by post must be postmarked on or before the closing date.
  • All images must be a .jpg file and be of the work in its entirety. Each image must be less than 2MB in size, and should be no larger than 1200 pixels - longest side.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • An artist may be required to provide additional information in connection with an application or a work submitted. Failure to provide the additional information may result in rejection of the application or the work.

Selected Works

General agreements:

  • All selected works must be made available for sale.
  • All selected works must be made available for display at the Milburn Art Prize during the entire period of the exhibition.
  • Artists must notify the Milburn Art Prize Coordinator (email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if any work which has been selected for entry is no longer available for sale at the Milburn Art Prize or of their intention to withdraw from sale any work during the Milburn Art Prize.
  • The commission specified in Exhibition in Brief is payable to the Brisbane Institute of Art in respect of each work sold during the exhibition. A 20% commission fee will be deducted from the sale price for the work prior to any payment being made to the artist.
  • Although all care will be exercised in handling finalists work, neither the Milburn Art Prize or Brisbane Institute of Art, nor any of its employees, agents or volunteer helpers will be responsible for any damage to, or loss of, a work however caused, whether by accident, negligence or otherwise.
  • Each shortlisted artist is responsible for acquiring their own insurance for the exhibition.
  • Artists who are unable to personally deliver and collect their work need to make provision for the cost of packing, delivery, unpacking and repacking and return of same. Works will not be returned via courier unless prior arrangements have been made with the Milburn Art Prize coordinator.
  • Artists whose work is selected for the exhibition, authorize and agree to permit the Milburn Art Prize/Brisbane Institute of Art committee and/or their agent to photograph the work and publish the photographs to promote the Milburn Art Prize and Brisbane Institute of Art and future exhibitions.

Delivery and Hanging

  • Selected works must be delivered to the Brisbane Institute of Art, 41 Grafton Street, Windsor, Brisbane Qld 4030 – enter via the carpark – during business hours (9.00am – 3.30pm, Monday – Friday) between Tuesday 18 April – Wednesday 26 April, 2023.
  • All works must be clearly marked with the artist’s name, address, the title of the work, the medium and the sale price.
  • All artworks to be hung must be ready to hang.
  • Photographs and other works on paper must be suitably mounted or otherwise prepared for display.
  • The presentation of very heavy works and works involving complex installations must be carried out by the artists personally.

Collection Arrangements

  • Unsold works must be collected from Brisbane Institute of Art from 9.00am – 10.00am Saturday 27 May, or from 9.00am – 3.30pm on Monday 29 May – Wednesday 31 May, 2023.
  • Interstate applicants should arrange for a courier to pack and remove the work/s during those hours.
  • Works not collected and in the absence of appropriate arrangements stated above at the expiry of a further one month will be deemed to be the property of the Brisbane Institute of Art and may be sold or otherwise disposed of by the committee acting in the best interests of the Milburn Art Prize and Brisbane Institute of Art.
  • Cheques for works sold at the Milburn Art Prize will be made payable to the artists and posted within two weeks of the close of the Milburn Art Prize.

The Selection Panel

The Selection Panel will be comprised of recognised arts industry representatives who are independent of the Brisbane Institute of Art and the Milburn Art Prize committee. This selection panel will review and assess all applications received, and will select the works to be exhibited as finalists in the Milburn Art Prize.

Amongst other things, works will be selected on the basis of compliance with the entry criteria and the quality of the work submitted. Invitation to submit a work for final viewing by the judge does not guarantee that the work will be exhibited. The panel may select more works than can be exhibited, however the judge will view all finalists and all finalist works are subject to sale.

Successful artists will be notified by email at least two weeks prior to the opening of the Milburn Art Prize.

Judges

One winning work and merit awards will be chosen from the selected finalists by the appointed judge. The decision of the selection panel and the judge is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.

The Prize

The winner of the Milburn Art Prize for Landscpe will receive a prize of the amount specified in the Exhibition Brief. The Prize is non-acquisitive. The winner will also receive a certificate of the award.

Certificates of merit awards may be awarded to artists for their entries.

The overall winner and recipients of merit awards will be announced at the opening night of the exhibition.

Milburn Art Prize: First Prize: $10,000.
Highly Commended: $1,000 ea.
Percentage commission on sales: 20%.

Milburn Art Prize Opening & Announcement: Friday 5th May, 6.00pm – 8.30pm.
Closing date of exhibition: Friday 26th May 2023.
